Choose a method to compress MP3 online

Choose how to compress MP3 online from the constraint you actually have: a relative reduction, a fixed attachment size, or a known listening-quality level.

Estimated percentage
When you compress MP3 online by percentage, use this for a quick relative target. A value of 40 percent means an output estimated near 40 percent of the source, not a 40 percent reduction. The worker derives a one-pass bitrate from source size and duration, so the actual ratio can differ.
Estimated target size

Recommended settings to compress MP3 online

Before you compress MP3 online, compare the source data rate with the quality preset. The preset should be lower when the goal is a smaller file. Otherwise the new encode can add loss without providing useful savings.

Low, 96 kbps
Start here for clear voice, lectures, meeting recordings, and transcription copies. Listen for metallic consonants and unstable background noise. Dense music, cymbals, ambience, and wide stereo can reveal strong artifacts at this rate.
Medium, 192 kbps
Use this as a general listening target for mixed speech and music. It is less aggressive than Low and often a better starting point when the source is 256 or 320 kbps. It will not shrink a 128 kbps source.
High, 320 kbps
Choose High when limiting added loss matters more than saving space. A 320 kbps output normally cannot reduce an MP3 already encoded at 320 kbps or below, so it is not a practical compression choice for many sources.
Percentage for a flexible reduction
The default percentage target is 40 percent of the source size. Use it when no exact platform limit applies and compare the result with the source. A very aggressive percentage can force the derived bitrate toward the supported minimum.
MB for a strict transfer budget
Enter a target safely below the maximum accepted by the destination. The target must also be below the source size. Download and check the actual result before relying on it for an automated submission or time-sensitive delivery.

Estimate size from bitrate and duration

Fixed-bitrate MP3 size is approximately bitrate multiplied by duration and divided by eight. VBR behavior and metadata can move the final number slightly.

96 kbps
Expect about 0.72 MB per minute, 22 MB for 30 minutes, or 43 MB for one hour. This is the Low quality preset and is most appropriate for speech that remains clear after a listening test.
128 kbps reference
Expect about 0.96 MB per minute, 29 MB for 30 minutes, or 58 MB for one hour. This is not one of the three quality labels, but it is useful for understanding the relationship between bitrate and size.
192 kbps
Expect about 1.44 MB per minute, 43 MB for 30 minutes, or 86 MB for one hour. This is the Medium quality preset.
320 kbps
Expect about 2.4 MB per minute, 72 MB for 30 minutes, or 144 MB for one hour. This is the High quality preset and offers the least size reduction.

When you compress MP3 online by percentage or MB, the derived bitrate is limited to the supported 8 to 320 kbps range. A target below what that range can deliver may not be reached.

Why an MP3 may not become smaller

If the source bitrate is already below the selected quality preset, the output may be similar in size or larger. For example, converting a 128 kbps source with Medium at 192 kbps spends more data on a signal that has already lost detail. Format Factory reports an output that is not smaller as failed compression.

Percentage and MB modes calculate a bitrate from source size and duration, then keep it within 8 to 320 kbps. Very small targets can hit the minimum and still miss the requested size. Metadata and encoding overhead also matter more when the audio itself is very compact.

If a WAV, FLAC, AIFF, or ALAC original exists, create the smaller MP3 from that source with the audio converter instead of recompressing an MP3. This avoids stacking one lossy generation on another and usually produces a cleaner delivery file.

When you compress MP3 online, treat the result as a practical transfer copy, not a replacement master. Keep the best source until the destination accepts the result and a listening check confirms that speech, music, timing, and channel balance remain usable.

Troubleshoot MP3 compression

A completed output must pass both tests: it is small enough for the destination, and it still sounds acceptable for the intended listener.

The target is missed or the task fails

Confirm that the target is below the source size. If the output cannot be made smaller, choose a lower quality level or a more aggressive percentage, understanding that audible loss will increase.

For a hard limit, lower the estimated MB target and leave headroom. One-pass encoding cannot guarantee an exact byte result, especially near the supported minimum bitrate.

The audio sounds damaged

Compare source and result at the same playback volume. Listen for metallic speech, watery high frequencies, unstable stereo, smeared transients, and distracting background-noise changes.

Return to a gentler target or the best available source. If the file needs trimming or channel changes, complete those edits elsewhere before compressing the final MP3.
