How to Use the MP4 Converter

Create MP4 files from common video containers. Auto uses broadly compatible H.264 video and AAC audio, while advanced settings expose VP9, CPU H.264 and H.265, resize, subtitle, audio, effect, trim, and crop controls.

When should you use an MP4 converter?

Use an MP4 converter when a supported MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI, WMV, FLV, OGV, or 3GP source must become MP4 for a player, editor, browser, or upload service.

The destination rejects the container
Choose this page when a phone, browser upload, presentation tool, television, or editor accepts MP4 but rejects the current extension. Auto creates H.264 video with AAC audio, a broadly supported MP4 combination.
The source is already MP4
Do not use this hub merely to make an existing MP4 smaller. The dedicated Compress MP4 page exposes percentage, target size, quality, resolution, and maximum-bitrate methods for that job.
The current file already works
Conversion may be unnecessary when the receiving system accepts the source container and codecs. The MP4 converter is useful when a clear compatibility or delivery requirement justifies another file, but a new encode takes time and can add quality loss. Keep the source as the master.
The workflow only needs audio
Use Video to MP3 when the picture is not required, or use the broader video converter for another available audio output. MP4 remains a video container even when a file contains a simple image or mostly audio.

Recommended MP4 converter settings

The MP4 converter defaults to settings chosen for general compatibility. Change a codec or picture control only when the real destination gives you a reason.

General playback and upload
Use Auto video and audio, which produce H.264 and AAC. Leave Resize Video and Video Frame Rate on No change, leave effects off, and retain audio. This is the safest starting point when the recipient asks only for MP4.
A modern destination that accepts H.265
Choose CPU H.265 only after confirming decoder support. It can use data efficiently at a given perceived quality, but older browsers, televisions, editing tools, and devices may reject it. AAC remains the practical audio choice.
An older device
Use H.264 and enable the old-device compatibility option. Avoid H.265 and VP9. Keep dimensions and frame rate within the device specification rather than assuming that the .mp4 extension alone guarantees playback.
A fixed upload specification
Match the stated resolution, frame rate, profile, level, and bitrate. Use bitrate mode only when the service gives a data-rate requirement. For a general quality target, CRF is more adaptable to scenes with different complexity.
A captioned delivery copy
Upload SRT or ASS and choose hard subtitles when the text must appear in every player. Choose soft subtitles only when the destination supports a selectable MP4 subtitle stream. Cross-container embedded subtitle Copy is not offered.

Check what can change from each source

Containers with different extensions can carry very different streams. The MP4 converter creates a delivery copy and does not promise a one-to-one transfer of every source feature.

  • MOV camera and phone files

    MOV may rely on rotation and camera metadata as well as the encoded pixels. Preserve metadata when useful, but verify orientation and color in the completed MP4 because container-specific fields may not map.

  • MKV with several tracks

    Matroska can contain alternate audio, subtitles, chapters, and attachments. The current workflow auto-selects one available audio stream and does not preserve every MKV feature. Upload a required SRT or ASS file separately.

  • WEBM recordings and animations

    WEBM commonly contains VP8 or VP9 video with Opus or Vorbis audio. Auto converts these to H.264 and AAC. Alpha transparency is not guaranteed in the ordinary opaque MP4 output.

  • AVI, WMV, and FLV archives

    These containers may hold old or uncommon codecs, unusual aspect information, or damaged streams. Test a representative section before processing a folder and confirm that the source plays from beginning to end.

  • OGV and 3GP sources

    These formats often come from a specific web or mobile workflow. Leave Resize Video and Video Frame Rate on No change first. Upscaling a small 3GP source or raising its frame rate cannot create missing detail or smoother captured motion.

Understand quality, size, and processing time

CRF lets the encoder vary data by scene complexity. Lower CRF keeps more detail and makes a larger file. Bitrate mode targets a selected video rate, while a slower CPU preset may improve compression efficiency at the cost of time. No setting can recover texture that the source has already lost.

Resolution and frame rate also matter. Reducing either can lower data needs, but it changes the picture or motion. Selecting a higher frame rate repeats frames rather than interpolating new movement. Upscaling creates additional pixels without creating additional captured detail.

Noise, grain, water, foliage, confetti, and fast movement are harder to compress than clean slides or a static talking head. The same settings can therefore produce very different sizes across a batch. Use Compress MP4 when size itself is the main goal.

This cross-container MP4 page re-encodes rather than offering Stream Copy. The MP4 converter cannot prove that a receiving app supports the selected profile or codec. Keep the original as the master, and treat the result as a compatibility or delivery copy until the intended device has played it successfully.

Troubleshoot MP4 output

A successful encode and successful playback are separate checks. Test the completed MP4 in the actual browser, device, editor, or upload form that requested it.

Conversion fails

Confirm that the source extension matches a supported file and that it plays locally. Damaged, incomplete, encrypted, or unsupported source streams can fail even when their container appears in the accepted list.

Retry with codecs on Auto, Resize Video and Video Frame Rate on No change, no crop, no effects, and no subtitle upload. Add one custom setting at a time after the basic MP4 succeeds.

The MP4 does not meet the destination

Use H.264 with AAC for broad compatibility, then check the required profile, level, dimensions, and frame rate. A destination may accept MP4 but reject H.265, VP9, unusual audio, or oversized video.

If sound is wrong, the source may contain multiple tracks and automatic selection chose another one. The MP4 converter does not currently provide a language or commentary track selector.
