How to Use the Online Video Converter
Convert common video files to 3GP, AVI, FLV, MKV, MOV, MP4, OGV, WEBM, or WMV, or extract audio to any available audio output. New files inherit the shared setup, and a file's settings button can override codecs, quality, resize, subtitles, effects, trim, or crop.

Choose an online video converter output by destination
An online video converter should solve a requirement from the player, editor, or upload service. Choosing a format because its name is familiar can still produce a file that the destination cannot decode.
- MP4 for ordinary delivery
- Choose MP4 when a browser, phone, television, presentation tool, or upload form expects a broadly playable file. Auto uses H.264 video and AAC audio. That combination is a safer default than selecting H.265 or VP9 without checking the receiving device.
- WEBM for a web workflow
- Choose WEBM when a site, browser application, or publishing pipeline specifically asks for it. Auto uses VP9 video and Opus audio, while VP8 and Vorbis are available for destinations built around those older combinations.
- MOV for a stated QuickTime requirement
- Choose MOV for an editor, ingest system, or handoff specification that requires the container. MP4 already works in many Apple products, so changing to MOV by itself does not improve quality or make a video more editable.
- Other containers for a stated workflow
- Choose MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, OGV, or 3GP when the destination specifies one. MKV is not inherently a legacy format. By default, FFmpeg selects one available audio stream; same-container Subtitle Copy explicitly maps source audio and subtitle streams instead. There is no language or track selector, and attachments are not preserved. The other containers often serve older workflows. Confirm the exact codec requirement because the extension alone does not guarantee support.
- Audio output when the picture is unnecessary
- Choose MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, or another available audio destination when only the soundtrack is needed. The result omits the picture. Keep the source video if frames, subtitles, or another embedded audio stream may be needed later.
Recommended online video converter settings
Use Auto for codecs and No change for resize and frame rate as a reliable starting point. The best online video converter setup changes only the controls tied to a real compatibility, size, or editing need.
- Broad playback support
- Start with MP4 plus Auto video and audio, keep the original resolution and frame rate, and leave effects off. Auto produces H.264 and AAC. If an older decoder needs the conservative output, select H.264 explicitly and then enable old-device compatibility.
- A smaller delivery copy
- Keep the required container, then lower CRF quality gradually or reduce resolution. H.265 can be efficient, but only choose it when the target supports it. A lower frame rate can reduce motion data, but it can also make camera movement and scrolling look uneven.
- A fixed platform specification
- Match the documented codec, maximum dimensions, frame rate, and bitrate. Use CBR only when the destination gives a bitrate requirement. Leave enough room for audio and container overhead when a platform also imposes a total file-size limit.
- A clip that only needs trimming
- Set start and end times and leave unrelated picture settings unchanged. Trimming still creates a newly processed result in this workflow. Verify the first and last seconds because a time entered beyond the available duration can produce an unexpected range or failure.
What each setting really changes
The settings panel filters options by the selected container. An online video converter cannot make every codec, subtitle mode, sample rate, or channel layout valid for every output.
Codec, CRF, and bitrate
The codec determines decoder compatibility. For H.264, H.265, VP8, and VP9, lower CRF values retain more detail and make larger files. Theora uses the opposite VBR quality direction, where a higher value retains more detail. Bitrate mode is useful when a receiving system specifies a data rate.
Resolution, aspect ratio, and crop
Resize changes pixel dimensions. Fit can scale, crop, or pad for a new shape, while numeric crop removes picture area. Odd crop dimensions are rounded down to even pixel values. Upscaling creates more pixels but cannot restore missing detail.
Frame rate and transforms
Leave Video Frame Rate set to No change for ordinary conversion. Lowering frame rate discards motion samples, while selecting a higher rate repeats frames rather than creating motion interpolation. Rotate and flip change orientation; they are not compatibility settings.
Audio controls
Choose an audio codec and its supported bitrate, sample rate, and channel layout. Video outputs offer volume, fades, and Remove Audio; audio-only outputs also offer Reverse. These controls alter the program. A higher sample rate or bitrate does not recover information missing from the source.
Subtitles and metadata
Upload SRT or ASS subtitles for hard output, or use soft output only where the container supports it. Embedded subtitle Copy appears only when input and output containers match. Metadata preservation is enabled by default, but unsupported fields may be omitted.
Why the result can be larger or look different
File size depends on duration, codec efficiency, CRF or bitrate, dimensions, frame rate, audio settings, and the source itself. A noisy night recording, film grain, water, foliage, and fast motion usually need more data than a clean static presentation. Re-encoding an already efficient file at a generous quality setting can increase its size.
Any lossy video or audio encode can add another generation of loss. Keeping the source resolution does not mean keeping identical pixels. Stream Copy avoids re-encoding, but this interface offers it only when input and output containers match and the selected workflow can represent that choice.
For a mixed batch, use shared settings for files with the same destination and open a row override for an unusual orientation, trim, crop, subtitle, or audio need. Convert one representative difficult scene before running many long files. Keep originals until the real destination accepts the results.
Troubleshoot conversion and playback
A failed online video converter job and a completed file that the destination rejects are different problems. Test decoding first, then test destination compatibility.
The job does not start or fails
Confirm that the extension matches a supported MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI, WMV, FLV, OGV, or 3GP file and that the video plays locally. Damaged, encrypted, incomplete, or unusually encoded streams may not decode.
Retry with codecs on Auto, Resize Video and Video Frame Rate on No change, no crop, no effects, and no subtitle upload. Add one custom setting at a time after a basic conversion succeeds.
The result plays incorrectly
If playback fails, use a more compatible codec such as H.264 and AAC in MP4. By default, FFmpeg selects one available source audio stream and there is no language or track selector. Same-container Subtitle Copy is the exception because it explicitly maps source audio and subtitle streams.
For wrong orientation, inspect rotate and source metadata. For missing captions, confirm whether hard or soft subtitles are required and whether the selected container supports the requested mode.
