How to Use the MOV to MP4 Converter

Make iPhone, camera, and QuickTime MOV recordings easier to play and upload by converting them to MP4. Auto uses broadly compatible H.264 video and AAC audio, while advanced settings expose the other codecs and controls supported by the MP4 container.

  1. 1

    Choose MOV files

Add the QuickTime videos you want to convert. Apply one setup to all files, then use a file's settings button when it needs an override.

  2. 2

    Prepare the MP4 output

Leave codecs on Auto for H.264 and AAC. To set CRF, bitrate, profile, or another codec-specific option, select the video or audio codec explicitly; resize, frame rate, trim, and crop remain available separately.

  3. 3

    Verify orientation and playback

Open the finished MP4 in the receiving app and check rotation, color, audio synchronization, captions, and the final seconds before replacing or sharing anything.

Make iPhone and camera MOV files easier to use

A MOV file from an iPhone, camera, or QuickTime export may contain HEVC, H.264, or another video codec. That is why a file can have the familiar .mov extension and still fail in an upload form, presentation app, browser, or older player. Renaming it to .mp4 does not change the streams inside. The MOV to MP4 converter decodes supported media and creates a separate MP4 delivery copy.

For ordinary playback and sharing, leave the output on Auto. Format Factory then writes H.264 video with AAC audio, which is a practical starting point for mixed phones, browsers, televisions, and office software. Keep the original MOV until you have checked the new file. Cross-container Stream Copy is not offered on this page, so the MP4 is re-encoded rather than simply placed in a different wrapper.

MOV to MP4 converter settings by destination

The safest choice depends on where the file must open. The MOV to MP4 converter has several codecs, but more recent does not always mean more compatible.

General sharing and upload
Choose Auto or H.264 with AAC. Keep the source resolution and frame rate unless the service publishes a limit. This combination is the best default for messaging, learning platforms, presentation software, and recipients using a mix of devices.
A known modern destination
H.265 can use less data than H.264 for a similar visual result, but some older browsers, televisions, and editing tools cannot decode it. Use H.265 only when the recipient or platform confirms support, then test the result there.
Older playback hardware
The old-device option forces H.264 Baseline, Level 3.0, and yuv420p. It is intended for a dated decoder, not as a general quality setting. Pair it with a modest frame size and test the actual device before converting a batch.

Keep vertical video, framing, and sound correct

Most phone footage needs no visual change. Open advanced settings only when the picture, duration, or audio has a specific problem.

  • Resolution and aspect ratio

Keep the original dimensions for a normal conversion. If a destination requires a fixed canvas, Max fits the video inside it, Crop fills the canvas and removes edges, Pad adds borders, and Scale forces the exact width and height. Scale can distort the picture when the aspect ratios differ.

  • Frame rate

Leave frame rate on No change to retain the source motion. Raising the frame rate repeats frames rather than creating new motion detail. Lowering it can make pans, gestures, and scrolling less smooth, so use a lower rate only for a stated delivery limit.

  • Orientation, crop, and trim

Use Rotate when a clip displays sideways despite its phone orientation data. Flip mirrors the image. Numeric Crop removes a chosen rectangle, with odd output dimensions rounded down to even values. Trim removes unwanted time from the beginning or end.

  • Audio

AAC is the automatic MP4 audio choice, with sample rate and channels mapped to codec-compatible values when necessary. Select AAC explicitly only when the destination requires a supported bitrate, rate, or layout. Volume, fades, and silent output are available but are not required for a format conversion.

MOV to MP4 converter quality and file size

When you explicitly choose H.264, CRF 18 is the highest-quality end of the public control, 21 is a useful balanced test, and 28 trades more detail for a smaller file. Lower CRF values create larger results. H.265 uses a different useful range, so do not copy an H.264 number and expect the same appearance. A fixed bitrate is appropriate when a platform states a data-rate ceiling, but it does not guarantee equal quality across a quiet interview and a fast camera scene.

A slower H.264 or H.265 CPU preset can spend more encoding time on compression efficiency. It does not improve the information already in the source. If the MOV to MP4 converter result is too large, first raise CRF gradually, then consider a smaller resolution. Check faces, text, gradients, and quick movement after each change instead of judging only the file-size number.

Check the finished MP4 before deleting anything

Watch the beginning and end, confirm orientation and sound, and open the result in the actual destination.

Subtitles and metadata

You can upload an SRT or ASS file and burn it into the picture or add a selectable soft track. MP4 soft subtitles are written as mov_text, so ASS styling is not guaranteed to survive. Hard subtitles remain visible as part of the picture, but an unavailable ASS font may be substituted, so test the rendered styling.

Embedded MOV subtitles cannot use cross-container Copy here. Metadata preservation is enabled by default, but a QuickTime-specific field may have no MP4 equivalent.

Playback and conversion problems

If the MP4 will not open, retry with H.264 and AAC at the original size and frame rate. If processing stops, confirm that the MOV plays from beginning to end and is not incomplete, encrypted, or visibly damaged.

The MOV to MP4 converter is not a repair service. A readable first frame does not prove that every later segment can be decoded.

MOV to MP4 Converter FAQ

Why convert MOV to MP4?

The default H.264 and AAC MP4 combination is accepted by more browsers, messaging apps, upload forms, and playback devices than many MOV codec combinations.

Can I keep the MOV resolution?

Yes. Leave Resize Video set to No change. You can also target 1080p, 720p, or 480p when you need a smaller output.

Will every MOV metadata field appear in MP4?

Metadata preservation is enabled by default, but fields that the MP4 container or FFmpeg output does not support may be omitted.
