How to Compress MP4 Online

Reduce an MP4 file for an upload limit, message, or storage target without changing its container. Choose CPU H.264 or H.265, encoding quality and speed, a compression method, resize controls, and container-compatible subtitle modes.

Choose a method to compress MP4 online

The best way to compress MP4 online depends on whether the real constraint is relative size, a fixed upload limit, visual quality, display resolution, or maximum video bitrate.

Estimated percentage
Use this for a quick relative target. A value of 40 percent means an output estimated near 40 percent of the source size, not a 40 percent reduction. The default is 60 percent. It is a one-pass estimate, so the actual ratio can differ.
Estimated target size
Enter a value below the source when an attachment, learning platform, or upload form has a hard limit. Target safely below that limit because duration probing, container overhead, audio, and source complexity can move the final number.
Target video quality
Choose CRF from 18 to 51 when appearance matters more than exact size. Lower CRF retains more detail and creates a larger file. Quality mode also exposes CPU compression speed, which trades processing time for compression efficiency.
Target video resolution
Use a preset, width, height, or exact dimensions when the output will be displayed on a smaller canvas. Reducing pixels can save substantial data, but it also removes image detail. Upscaling is not a compression strategy.
Target maximum bitrate
Use this only when a streaming or delivery specification gives a maximum video rate and buffer requirement. It also exposes CRF. A bitrate cap does not by itself guarantee a total file size because duration, audio, and overhead still matter.

Recommended settings to compress MP4 online

Quality mode starts with CPU H.264, CRF 21, and the veryfast preset. Maximum-bitrate mode exposes CRF together with the cap and buffer, but not encoding speed. Treat these as supported starting values, not a universal promise of the best result.

General sharing and playback
Use H.264 and keep original dimensions first. CRF 21 is the current H.264 starting point. Raise CRF gradually for a smaller file and inspect text, faces, gradients, and movement. Enable old-device compatibility only for an older target.
A compatible modern device
Use CPU H.265 only after confirming decoder support. Its current starting CRF is 28. H.265 can be efficient at a similar perceived quality, but an older browser, television, editing tool, or phone may reject the result.
A strict upload-size limit
Choose estimated MB rather than guessing a CRF. Enter a target below the platform maximum and leave headroom. Download the result and verify its actual size before relying on it for a deadline or automated submission.
A smaller screen target
Use resolution mode when 1080p, 720p, 480p, or another supported size is sufficient. Preserve aspect ratio by width or height unless the destination explicitly requires exact dimensions. Exact resizing can distort the picture if the shape changes.
Subtitles in the result
Use same-container Copy for compatible embedded source subtitles, or upload SRT or ASS. Hard subtitles become part of the picture. Soft subtitles remain selectable where the MP4 path supports them. Test the actual player before a large batch.

Estimate size without confusing bitrate and quality

One megabit per second of total data is roughly 7.5 MB per minute before final container differences. Video, audio, and duration all contribute to the total.

A 10-minute video
At about 1 Mbps total, expect roughly 75 MB. At 2 Mbps, expect roughly 150 MB. A maximum video bitrate is not the same as total bitrate, so audio and container data can make the actual file larger than this simplified video-rate calculation.
A percentage target
A 500 MB source at 40 percent targets about 200 MB. This does not mean removing 40 percent. It means aiming for an output that is 40 percent of the source. The encoder derives a one-pass data budget from source size and duration.
An MB target
The requested value must be smaller than the source. The worker reserves a small internal margin when deriving bitrate, but content and muxing still prevent a byte-level guarantee. Use a lower target when the receiving system has no tolerance above its limit.
A CRF target
CRF does not specify a final size. A simple slide presentation may be small at a given CRF, while grain, water, foliage, or fast action can be much larger. Use CRF when visual consistency matters more than an exact upload budget.

Why some videos are harder to shrink

Noise, film grain, snow, confetti, water, foliage, fine fabric, and handheld movement change many pixels from frame to frame. Encoders need more data to preserve them than they need for a static screen recording or a clean talking head. Two videos with the same duration and resolution can therefore compress very differently.

Lowering resolution removes spatial detail. Raising CRF removes more coded detail. Lowering the data-rate cap limits what the encoder can spend during difficult scenes. A slower preset may use the available data more efficiently, but it cannot make an aggressive target lossless.

To compress MP4 online without guessing, inspect a representative difficult scene rather than the opening logo or a static thumbnail. Check small text, faces, gradients, dark areas, rapid motion, and audio sync. Keep the source and compare both files at the same display size.

The output remains an MP4 container, but its encoded streams differ from the source. It is a delivery copy, not a bit-for-bit replacement master. Processing time varies with duration, resolution, codec, preset, filters, and queue conditions.

Troubleshoot MP4 compression

File size is only one acceptance test. A useful result must also retain required picture detail, sound, captions, timing, and decoder compatibility.

The result is not smaller or misses the estimate

The source may already be efficient, or the quality and resolution settings may leave too little room to reduce data. A result that is not smaller is reported as a failed compression instead of a successful reduction.

Percentage and MB modes are estimates. Try a lower target, reduce resolution, or accept more quality loss. Do not combine random settings at once because you will not know which change produced the visible result.

Playback or quality is unacceptable

If H.265 fails, return to H.264 or confirm the destination decoder. If the picture shows blocks, ringing, smeared motion, or unreadable text, use a lower CRF, a less aggressive target, or a larger resolution.

Check duration, orientation, audio sync, subtitles, and the first and last seconds. If you compress MP4 online for a hard limit, verify both actual size and playback before deleting or replacing anything.

The cloud worker re-encodes the video from a percentage, target size, quality, resolution, or maximum-bitrate target. Percentage and size are one-pass estimates, so duration and source complexity can change the final result.

Can MP4 compression preserve the exact original quality?

No size reduction is guaranteed without tradeoffs. Re-encoding can change visual quality even when the original resolution is kept, and a job that cannot produce a smaller result returns an explicit compression error.
